Best Tressed

We had a front-row seat to the 2010 Academy Awards, and though there were quite a few style hits and misses, there were absolutely abundant hair themes to be noted. Here's how you can steal these fab Oscar hair looks without throwing cash at a stylist... perfect for the prom crowd!

Anna Kendrick

Pamela Kelly, National Director of Technical Services for Fantastic Sams, noted that the 2010 Oscars were all about sleek, sophisticated hair, and whether pinned up or tressed down, red carpet looks shared polished strands. Hair this awards season was about classy, timeless appeal. With the majority of dresses appearing to be strapless--a classic up do allows a feminine display of the shoulders and elongates the neck for a formal style

Pamela shared some tips on recreating some of the most popular looks from the Red Carpet – adapt them to your own life, whether it's prom night or a quiet night at home

The Return of the Chignon

This classic hairstyle was a favorite among many celebrities. In fact, it appeared to be the most popular on the red carpet! Stars like Vera Farmiga (Up In The Air), E! Host Juliana Rancic, Anna Kendrick (Up In The Air), Charlize Theron, and Elizabeth Banks sported classic chignon styles.

Juliana Rancic wore a knotted chignon that added elegant detail to her total look. Up In The Air costars Farmiga and Kendrick paired their chignons with side swept bangs and side details.

"My personal favorites showing off their chignons were Faith Hill and Demi Moore. With side swept parts that added slight volume to the front of the style, the chignons were secured behind one ear with a tousled effect providing an asymmetrical look. Very classy and elegant," says Pamela

How to steal the look

Brush hair straight back and secure a pony tail low, at the base of the neck. Roll the ponytail towards the nape of the neck and secure with bobby pins. For a textured, tousled look, lightly separate the secured chignon with your fingers. Spray with shaping spray. This lightweight spray will keep the chignon in place without making it too stiff and unnatural looking.

Want the look Juliana was wearing? Once the ponytail has been secured with an elastic band, separate into 4 smaller sections. Take each strand and twist until the section coils into place. Secure with bobby pins. Continue until 4 sections have been coiled and pinned into place.

I agree with the comments about the hairstyles on Y & R. What is going on with Victoria's hair, it's horrible and I cannot believe Nikki's hair, no style, just hangs there. Sharon's hair bugs me with the middle part and the uneven cut, no personality with these styles. Ashley, Phyllis and Jana look great so come on stylists, do something with these lovely ladies. And Lauren, boy she really needs to get a make over, the bangs are too long and as the previous writer wrote, the bangs look they are glued to her forehead, terrible. Katherine looks good all the time and Cloe should get a shorter style, it just hangs there, she is short and it looked much better when she was first on the show.

I am sick and tired to death of Victorias hair! As a current stylist who specializes in ethnic and caucasion hair the best. I would love to come to the set of Y&R, and go to town on her hair. It looks like raggedy anne! ITs wild, hair curly, half straight, no layers all in her face and out of control. I can understand if she hasnt done her roots due to pregnancy, but shes not preggo, so what is the problem. Also sharon needs to 86 the middle part, and use Bedhead Manipulater on her fly aways. Phylisses hair looks great all the time and also Ashleys and Laurens!

Sharon's hair could not look worse if a dog had chewed it off. I think Lauren's hair looks just like what most men love.I am a female and I love it.

Sharon has a beautiful face and doesn't need much makeup, she does have pretty hair, but it does need to be styled or changed up more often. Phylis has a nice new flirty cut. Once upon a time, Vicki had perfect hair. Could someone atleast brush her hair, and make her put some pants on when she and Hill-Billy have visitors. Where's her selfrespect?

The ladies need some help with their hair styles. For the most part they do look quite attractive but the men?????? Is anyone taking care of the men???? Every man has had the same hair since the 70's and the younger ones just don't get around to the barber often enough! And loose the facial hair it's awful!

I agree that the hairstyles need some changes but don't blame the styalits. Have you not noticed that when one goes to the hairdresser today it is very expensive and the person comes out of the salon looking as if she just came out to the shower. the new hair dressers should go back to school to learn hairdressing of the yesteryear.

Marianne July 15, 2010 | 8:46 PM

Please, please do something with Victoria's hair! Too long and stringy and waaaaay too many colors!! A cut just below the shoulders would look much better in a soft brown with a few high and lowlights.

Emilie July 06, 2010 | 7:49 PM

Sharon is the most beautiful woman on the show - BUT - her hair is really terrible. Fix it for God's sake. Do not like Nikki's hair, needs a nicely cut A-bob or something modern. She looks terrible.

Catheline Torregano July 01, 2010 | 11:10 AM

I think all the hair styles are (horrible)

Veronica June 24, 2010 | 8:13 AM

I would love it if they would change Sharon hair she is to young to be looking like a old lady by the head. something like a nice bob cut will look great on her.

Sadie June 10, 2010 | 8:49 PM

I wish someone would give Sharon a style that is more flattering. She's a lovely woman but that parted in the middle look is not terribly flattering on her. I do love the way Phyllis has her hair, it always looks so shiny and sleek.

keisha June 10, 2010 | 10:30 AM

I love Sharon's hairdo any style she put in her hair it look so great and also Nicki.

Hilda Geroux May 31, 2010 | 11:15 AM

the hair style is awful its straight and parted in the middle they look simply terriable. they look like clones. please give them some curl.

Judy May 25, 2010 | 1:21 PM

YES,VICTORIA'S HAIR IS ALWAYS A BIG MESS, AS FOR LAUREN, HER SO CALLED BANGS LOOK LIKED THEIR PASTED TO HER FOREHEAD THEY DON'T MOVE AT ALL. ALL THE LADIES NEED TO GET MADE OVERS.

Carolyn May 18, 2010 | 9:42 PM

I agree these girls need updating. All these women need a good hair cut. Do they wear hair extensions? Lauren, Sharon, and Phyllis have been wearing these same hair styles forever. I'm glad that Nikki went back to blonde. Who's idea was that hers or the show. Do they have to wear their hair per Young and Restless rules, or do they get to pick???

PATTY May 10, 2010 | 10:31 AM

Nicki looks best as a blonde. Chloe's hair looks good shorter. Ashley keeps changing her hairdo, but it looks nice on her anyway. I like sharon's, phyllis' and laurens hairdo. Gloria looks great in any color and her hairdo is great.

Beverly April 24, 2010 | 5:36 PM

Do something with Sharon, Victoria and Phyllis's hair. They are constantly putting it behind their ears.
