Winter Style Status
With all of the fall and winter trends out there, how do you know what to try and what to avoid? Some trends, like jackets with structured shoulders and jumpsuits (otherwise known as rompers), can be hard to pull off and should only be attempted by the truly fashion fearless. Others are more user-friendly and suitable for a wide range of body types. These five trends are some of the most versatile and easy-to-try seasonal updates.
PlaidNo longer reserved just for lumberjacks, plaid is now a quintessential fall/winter must-have. Try a long-sleeved button down (like Hollister's Manhattan Beach shirt, $39.50) paired with skinny jeans and boots, or for a more daring look, throw on a plaid dress over black tights and black shoes. The monochromatic leg will elongate your frame and add just the right about of modesty to a mini. This version, by Trout&Pout ($76), features a draped hem and allows you to show off another trend, the one-shoulder neckline. If you're more of a traditional gal, try this plaid shirtdress by Moulinette Soeurs ($118).
Boyfriend BlazerA brilliant cross-over piece, the boyfriend blazer has subtle sex appeal and is practical at the same time. To ensure a feminine silhouette, resist the urge to raid your man's closet. Opt instead for a fitted blazer that accentuates the female figure. Push or roll the sleeves up for an added edge. You will be hard pressed to find anything in your closet that this blazer does not flatter. Whether you are running errands in jeans and a t-shirt or heading out to a cocktail party, the boyfriend blazer is a go-to closet staple this season. Find affordable and chic versions at Urban Outfitters ($78) and J.Crew ($100).
Cocktail rings/CuffsFinally, an affordable trend that everyone can try, regardless of size, shape or age. Chunky cocktail rings and cuff bracelets are fun statement pieces that can really add a splash of color to an outfit. The bigger the better! For maximum drama, look for rings with large-scale faux stones and pave accents, like this one by Taliyah ($40). When searching for the perfect cuff, don't be afraid to let your personality show. Choose a piece accented with stones, leather (like this cuff by House of Harlow, $67), studs or wood. The options are endless. Contexture Design even makes a cuff out of reclaimed building materials that doubles as a coffee sleeve ($64)!
CapesOlé! Why let bullfighters have all the fun? Add a hint of retro charm to any ensemble with a striking, figure-friendly cape. Pair it with long leather gloves for a sophisticated, elegant look or with a long-sleeve waffle tee and jeans for a more casual vibe. Gap makes a great short and swingy cape ($68) that anyone can wear. If you're looking to push the trend, try Nic+Zoe's colorful Rendezvous Cape ($146). This is one trend that has stood the test of time.
Asymmetric NecklinesIn this case, it's good to be a little off-kilter. An asymmetrical neck or hemline can draw just the right amount of (positive) attention without going over-the-top. Ted Baker's ruffle top ($98) is a brilliant wardrobe addition that can flatter denim or a sparkly skirt (and everything in between). Or, this one-shoulder jersey dress by Aqua Couture ($119) is an eye-catching choice that features an oversized bat-wing design. It would be perfect with a pair of shimmery tights.
