Upon graduating from high school, Karan was accepted into the Parsons School of Design, where she stayed as a student for only two years. In an unusual move, Anne Klein offered her a position midway through her undergraduate career. With diligence it was not long before Karan had moved up to the head of the design team for the label. Karan was to retain the post until 1989, beyond even the creation of her own line of clothing in the mid-1980s.
After years of just women's apparel, the label expanded to menswear in 1992 with DKNY Men, which included casual wear, dress wear, formal wear, sportswear and shoes.
Eventually, the DKNY label also included accessories, jeans, intimate apparel, children's apparel, fragrances, a home collection and much more. Even though it had its ups and downs, DKNY can still be found in department stores at virtually every shopping mall throughout the country.
By late 2001, Karan was able to sell her company to the fashion conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) for a hefty sum of $243 million. Donna Karan stepped down as CEO of the company in 1997 but has remained as the official chairwoman and designer for the Donna Karan line.
Much of the designs these days are actually created by Peter Speliopoulos, former Cerruti designer. The DKNY line is currently designed by Jane Chung, who has been an employee of Karan's since her time at Anne Klein.
Most recently, in August of 2008, Karan re-launched her formerly discontinued line of fragrances, including Chaos, Black Cashmere, DK Fuel for Men, and Signature. Bergdorf Goodman owns the exclusive rights to the fragrances in the United States, as does Harrods Knightsbridge in England.
