Hot spring & summer fashions: Tips for your knits

Girlie fashions are in, white is the new black, dresses are hotter than ever, and this season's looks call for ultra-feminine patterns and styles. Shopping has never been more fun as we rev up for the coolest in hot summer styles yet!

Belt it out: Make sure this season's popular belts are an accent, not a divider. To maintain an elongated look and keep a continuous line for your body, keep the colors monochromatic and lift up your leg with a high sandal. Cable & Gauge offers a hip-length knit top with a macramé belt that is a perfect summer must-have when paired with a knee length short and a wedge sandal.

Focus: Buttons and belts offer fun novelty details this season, but be sure to stay focused. Cable & Gauge says balance and proportion make these details work. Large buttons on top can replace a necklace and become a focal point while an easy addition could include an important earring or a nice wide bracelet.

Shine on: Metallics -- especially gold and silver -- are hot again for summer and expected to continue through the rest of the year. Many European shows are incorporating shimmer in a futuristic "space odyssey" style. Cable & Gauge says shine on, but keep it simple. Wear a metallic top, but skip the necklace or any other metallic accessories that could compete.

Spice it up: If your true colors are more traditional, you have several summer options. Pair a breezy white baby doll top with black knee-skimming walking shorts for a classic look with a feminine touch. But for a dash of spice that compliments your summer glow, try a burnt amber or caramel top with your favorite chocolate brown or olive Capri or cropped pants.

Think ahead: This summer's metallics and brights transition easily into fall. Fall's cropped and swingy jackets will pair well with a sleeveless piece. For an even more contemporary look, layer a t-shirt or turtleneck under a sleeveless a-line top for a jumper effect. And summer's bright colors will work well with fall's newest neutral: grey.
