For a great way to update your look without breaking the bank, Sara Rogers suggests you pay attention to how you accessorize. "If you are shopping uptown or downtown cheap and chic, there is a lot in store for those pining for the latest in fashion." Standouts include headwear -- scarves, turbans and headbands -- along with statement rings, long necklaces and multiple bracelets often crafted of resin and/or Lucite. "Fashion mavens are into rocking the mod look this season. Handbags continue to reign supreme, with oversized satchels, totes and clutches for day receiving rave reviews." Rogers adds, "Metallics are popular, with silver making the headlines."
Accessories do indeed make the outfit, and we love Tucker Paisley's summer clutch bags. Rumor has it Kristen Bell and Christine Lakin have been seen toting their Kimberly clutch -- fun and compact and just large enough for your barest essentials. We also love their sweet Beth Cosmetic bags, which are even washable and durable... say in case you leave your lipstick open and it smears all over the inside. Not that we've done that.
And what's up on top? Head scarves cover up greasy roots from a day at the beach or outdoor excercise. This one (found at Nordstrom) has elastic in the back so it's easy to slip on and off.
Finally, when it comes to shoes this season, patent leather is leading the pack, Rogers says. "Platform, wedge, and chunky heels are all the vibe of what's going on." Ballet flats and peep-toe pumps are also in the mix and are tremendously popular. Many of the shoes this season feature buckle detail, mixed fabrication, python, zebra, leopard, mock croc, suede, leather, raffia, Lucite and even mock ostrich (which we call "mockstrich"). These heels (available at AMI Clubwear) have a cute python heel that follows the trend without pushing it.
Bedazzled and bejeweled? "Pearls, especially breezy pastel colors like lavender and pink, which are naturally occurring freshwater pearl colors, are really popular for spring and summer," says Amy Drescher-Hourigan, the VP of Marketing for Moon River Pearls. The traditional strand remains a classic look (you can twist two colors together), but a Tin Cup or pendant style is especially fresh right now.
For bracelets, cuffs are hot, especially those made from mother-of-pearl and shell. When it comes to earrings, we're seeing a movement away from dangles and chandeliers and back to smaller, dainty studs and hoops. "I love pearls combined with gemstones, too. The look is fresh and unexpected. The hard, shiny gems contrasting with the soft sheen of the pearls look wonderful," Amy says. She also predicts Baroque pearls -- those with no discernable symmetry -- to be a favorite this season. "Designers do interesting pieces with these big, chunky pearls that are such a contrast to the typical ladylike round pearl strands.
