It's no surprise that black is the new black this season. What is worth noting is that it's less slick, high tech, and graphic and more Italian grandmother in feeling this time around. Textured, old fashioned, and slightly mysterious--these are the touchstones for wearing black right now. You can get the look by picking up an essential piece or accessory in beautiful black.

Totally essential
This little bag is reminiscent of grandma in texture but is completely modern in size (9.5" x 5.5") and function. It has a snap top opening and one inside zippered pocket. Vera Bradley makes quality bags in a variety of sizes and shapes and this is just one of the many new winter offerings. $65. For more information go to www.verabradley.com.

Quite militant
High on my list of favorites is this velvet black cavalry coat by Newport News. It's a fresh take on military and the price is right so you can wear it as often as you like without worrying about wear and tear. $69. Available at www.newport-news.com.

How spirited
This classic newsboy cap in black velvet is an easy accessory high on style. Perfect for good and bad hair days. $15. Available at www.newport-news.com.

So versatile
Everyone needs a black tee shirt in their wardrobe and this shimmery one by Michael Stars can be dressed up or down. The great fitted and slimming design makes it perfect for work or play. Michael Stars Shine Banded Crewneck Top $38.00. For more information and styles go to www.michaelstars.com.

Feel luxurious
I'm high on these sumptuous oversize black mother-of-pearl beads. The 16" necklace is finished with a Tiffany-style cubic zirconia-encrusted pave ball clasp. You'll wear this strand for many seasons to come. $149. Available at www.moonriverpearls.com.

Be mysterious
If you invest in nothing else this season, make it the perfect pair of dark glasses. There are a lot of wonderful choices, but these are my favorites:

Classic twist
I adore this pair of Alain Mikli glasses and practically live in them. They have a tortoise-shell feel (in black) and the mix of clear and dark gives it a hint of Jackie O. without being too on the money. Store locations and more information at www.mikli.com.

Dark and light
These shades by Silhouette are the ultimate in high tech construction yet look dark and mysterious. They weigh less than nothing, and their aerosdynamic construction also makes them great for winter workouts. For more information go to www.silhouette.com.

Cool and intriguing
Wherever, whenever, these Miyagi shades will undoubtedly make you look cool and very intriguing. This pair, called Wicked, is popular because of its oversized rectangular shape that contains a six base curve, allowing even narrow faces to wear a large frame. Wicked frames are available at www.miyagieyewear.com.

Lights, camera, lashes!
Even if you're wearing big sunglasses, don't forget to treat your eyes to a glamorous black coat of Tarte's Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara. One of my favorite makeup brands, this mascara is the one you'll want to wear when you're going for ultra-lush black lashes. Lights, Camera, Lashes $18 at www.Tartecosmetics.com.

Can't live without
This Vera Bradley Zip Around wallet is so easy to use you won't believe how fast it becomes your favorite staple. I love its handy outer change pocket, nine convenient interior compartments, and perfect size. This cozy quilted alpine pattern looks and feels great every time you pull it out of your bag. $34. For more information go to www.verabradley.com.

Remember, the key to wearing black this season is finding the perfect accent piece that works with the rest of your wardrobe and adds a touch of glamour.
