In summer, you deal with sweat and sun, and you're more active (bike riding, swimming, hiking, etc.). Even just sitting on a patio on a hot summer day in the steamy heat can make your makeup run. So you shouldn't expect the makeup you used through fall and winter to perform the same way in the summer heat. Here are some swaps you'd be smart to make.
Switch to a tinted moisturizer. In the heat and humidity, you don't want as heavy a makeup product on your skin, so a lightweight tinted foundation, with its sheerer coverage, will help you feel ready to face the world in the summer conditions.
Switch to a waterproof mascara. When it's humid out, you perspire more, and you may find your regular mascara smudges and shows up in places other than your eyelashes. A waterproof mascara will stay put, so you don't have to fret about looking like a raccoon.
Switch to a sunscreen moisturizer for the face. Often makeup containing SPF doesn't provide enough protection (usually SPF 8, SPF 15 at most). Dermatologists recommend wearing SPF 30 on a daily basis, so you'd be smart to use a sunscreen moisturizer instead of your usual cream to have the protection you need against UV rays.
Switch to a mineral powder. A mineral powder contains natural sun protection, so when you powder your face throughout the day, you're reapplying sun protection (and remember, you're supposed to reapply sunscreen every two hours). A mineral powder is a great solution also because after you've done your makeup, you hardly want to apply a facial SPF moisturizer overtop and ruin your makeup job.
Switch to a lip stain. Even on the best of days, lip gloss has limited staying power. Add heat and humidity, and your gloss will disappear even faster. A lip stain will give your pout a more lasting colour. If you really love the shine, you can apply a sheer or tinted gloss overtop.
