Kelp and seaweed are making a splash in the world of hair care. Find out how these underwater plants can give your hair a healthy, shiny boost.

woman losing hair

Brushing your hair isn’t supposed to rip chunks of it out of your scalp, and strands of hair clinging onto your black mini before your hot date are no fashion statement. Hair loss is something many women dread and many more have to deal with on a daily basis. While it's normal to lose 50 to 100 pieces of hair a day, if you’re losing more than that, you may want to take a page out of Nemo’s book and add kelp and seaweed to your beauty and diet regimen.

What’s kelp?

The large seaweed plant is part of the brown algae family and is packed full of vitamins. Kelp has been used in Asian countries in soups and salads for centuries as a nutritious, low-calorie food, so it’s about time we in the West take advantage of what this plant has to offer.

Kelp for your scalp

Kelp contains many of the essential nutrients to ensure hair growth. It’s high in iodine and a great source of iron, sodium, phosphorus and calcium and has a variety of vitamins, including A, B1, B2, C, D and E. Kelp also contains laminaria angustata, which is believed to thicken hair. But it’s not as simple as massaging some of that funky seaweed on your scalp -- it’s not the kelp itself that makes your hair grow thicker and healthier, but the minerals inside that help stimulate hair growth.

Eating kelp

Kelp can be added to your diet in many different ways -- from supplements and raw seaweed to dried flakes that can be sprinkled onto foods. As with any new supplement or diet regimen, though, make sure to contact your physician to make sure adding kelp to your diet is safe for you. Also, be careful not to overdo it with the kelp, as it can lead to an iodine overdose, which can have dangerous effects on your body.

Not just for hair

Not only is kelp essential for hair growth, but it’s also beneficial for other parts of your body as well. Kelp is a great source of iron and iodine and adding kelp to your diet regulates thyroid hormone levels, aids in cancer prevention and acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory agent.

Lather it on

When looking for a shampoo to help restore your locks back to their healthy state, we recommend Aveeno’s Pure Renewal shampoo. The shampoo comes infused with Active Naturals Balancing Seaweed Extract and leaves your hair looking shinier, healthier and full of life.
