There's something about sweeping hair away from the face, even when done casually, that seems more sophisticated and put-together than wearing it loose. And with spring weather on its way and the mercury rising, styles that pull hair up and away is a good way to keep cool. Here are three of our favourite up-and-away hairstyles.
A chic, sleek ponytail will always be in style. To get the look, start with towel-dried, damp hair, and comb some product through. Use something that'll keep the hair pliable but smooth and shiny (such as a non-sticky gel or a hair cream). The product will help prevent flyaways and maintain the sleekness of the look. Part your hair naturally and secure an elastic around your hair at the nape of the neck.
This look is fantastic for that I-just-hopped-out-of-bed look (and, in fact, is a great option if you indeed do oversleep). After shampooing, towel-dry your hair, apply a mousse at the roots and comb through to the ends. Using a brush or comb, sweep your hair into a ponytail and secure it at the top of your head with an elastic. It may be easier to get the ponytail at the top of your head if you bend over when combing and gathering your ponytail. Twist the ponytail and, as you continue to twist, let it wrap around itself until it's all wrapped around the base where you've secured the ponytail with an elastic. Tuck the end of your ponytail into the topknot and secure discreetly with a bobby pin.
The look of choice for hipsters, a side braid is great for the days you don't have time to shampoo. Brush your hair and then spray some dry shampoo into your hair to absorb oil and add some texture, so your hair is easier to work with. Sweep hair to one side over your shoulder, split into three sections and loosely braid. Secure with an elastic. Keep it cool-looking by making sure it's messy — if the braid comes out too perfect, rough up the entire braid between the palms of your hands to encourage pieces to fall out.
