Olympic Beauty

As a former Olympian and gold medalist, Kristi Yamaguchi knows a thing or two about keeping your cool when the pressure is on. But skating isn't her only forte — she's got a pretty awesome beauty game too. As the world watches Team USA compete in this week's figure skating showdown in Sochi, Kristi takes some time to chat beauty with us.

An active beauty

This month's Winter Olympics certainly bring back lots of fond memories for Kristi, and she's been following the competitions right in the heart of the action in Sochi. Although she might not be competing for the gold, Kristi still stays active and is sensitive to the beauty problems any active gal faces.

So how does she stay beautiful while she's getting her heart racing? That's easy. "Being an athlete, especially in a sport like figure skating, you always want to look as cool, calm and collected as you can. Secret Clinical Strength in Invisible Solid is definitely in my arsenal, making sure I look confident — especially doing behind the scenes and being under the hot camera lights, it is the same thing. I make sure I powder before I go on so I can feel ready and confident in front of the cameras," Kristi shares.

Active beauty isn't the only topic Kristi is skilled in, though. All those years of competing in cold rinks certainly taught her a thing or two about skin care. Naturally, we were eager for her to share her tips with us! "Once in a while I will do a sugar body scrub from Sephora because you do get that dry skin build-up from the heat indoors and the cold rink, so it helps keep the skin moist and get rid of the dead skin. I try to moisturize every day and exfoliate my face once or twice a week," Kristi says.

In the midst of training and preparation, primping for all those competitions actually became a way to relax, Kristi says: "Doing my own hair and makeup is like my zen time and my time to focus. It is part of my routine of getting ready, which is a calming period."

Along the way, she has developed a steady beauty routine and some serious product faves. Eyeliner and mascara (Kristi cites COVERGIRL Bombshell Mascara as her number one choice) are two mainstays she won't leave the house without, and Beautiful by Estee Lauder is a scent she's worn throughout the years.

Mother knows best

These days, Kristi keeps busy working with her Always Dream Foundation and spending time with her two daughters. As a mom, Kristi knows that primping time is often limited, but she's picked up a few time-saving tricks along the way, like investing in multitasking products: "In the morning, I quickly put on Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer because it has SPF in it and a little bit of coverage, so when I am getting ready quickly in the morning it is a one-step thing. As a busy mom, I also quickly do my eyes by putting on eyeliner and mascara and then I am out the door. And of course the lips!"

Of course, over the years all moms share certain nuggets of wisdom with their children. Growing up, Kristi's mom always applied lipstick when going out, and Kristi says it's become a sort of joke between her and her sister to remind the other one to apply lipstick before leaving the house.

When asked what beauty lesson she hopes to instill in her two girls, Kristi cites one about skin care type: "I would tell them to look after their skin even though they are young, and especially to make sure to wear sunblock. It is when you are older that you appreciate looking after your skin [more so than] when you are younger."
