Always wanted to try the denim on denim trend you’ve seen all the street style stars rock? Now’s your time to finally take the plunge, girl! Our experts break down how to make it work.
Go for a monochromatic look
According to fashion expert and VP of CLD Style House, Rebecca Raskind, one of the easiest ways to wear denim on denim is to stick with a similar color and style for each piece. "For instance, a denim button up shirt tucked into denim cutoff shorts or jeans of the same wash can look very on trend,” she notes. “To elevate your monochromatic look, add a pop of color, such as a cherry red belt or some high heels and mixed metal jewelry for a dressier take.”
Pair white or black jeans with a blue denim jacket
For those a little bit hesitant to embrace the trend, Raskind recommends testing the waters by pairing white or black denim with a classic blue piece. "For example, white skinny jeans styling with a striped shirt and denim jacket can look effortlessly chic,” she points out. Or you can try pairing black skinnies with a white denim jacket for a contrasting light and dark look.
Mix the weights of the two denims
When it comes to wearing denim on denim, television costume designer and clothes editor at xoJane.com, Alison Freer, says the best idea is to just go for it! "Make the focal point of your outfit the fact that you are boldly rocking denim on denim, and what of it? Don’t be afraid to pair a pale blue, lightweight chambray shirt in a small repeating pattern with a pair of darker-wash boyfriend style jeans. The trick is to mix the weights of the denims you are wearing together, that way the look becomes all about contrasts in texture.”
For extra credit, roll up your cuffs and finish the look with a pair of floral denim Dr. Martens boots, advises Freer. "If two pieces of denim is your max, keep it simple with a pair of low-top white Converse sneaks and bare ankles.”
Style distressed denim with a clean cut top
Have a favorite pair of ripped up boyfriend jeans? Simply add a brown belt and style them with a clean cut, denim button down shirt for a look that’s all dressed up but casual at the same time. Depending on where you’re headed, slip into either high heels or flats to complete the outfit. This combination works great because the two different types of denim clash to create interest.
