Actress Brittany Snow looked fabulous at the InStyle Summer Soiree this month, clad in a striped peplum Lela Rose dress. But, all we could really look at was her fabulous orange lipstick.
The bright hue has been a favorite on designer runways for the past few seasons, but we've always been a bit wary of rocking it ourselves. It's time to try it — and what better time than fall? We needed some guidance on how to wear it, though, so we asked makeup artist La Toya Nieves to give us a few pointers.
"Anyone can look great in the color orange. Orange is a color that works well with all shades," Nieves told SheKnows.
The key is to find the right shade for your skin tone.
- Warm skin tones: Look for yellow-based oranges with flecks of gold, bronze or copper. Look for shades that are slightly darker than your skin tone. We love Poppy Lip & Cheek Stain ($23).
- Cool skin tones: Stick to light red or coral oranges. We like M.A.C. Lipstick in Peach Blossom ($15).
It's important to balance the rest of your beauty look with your bold lips.
"If you're going for a bold lip, then you want to keep the eyes subtle — or vice versa," Nieves added. "But, the most important thing is to make sure that your lips are hydrated. The best way to achieve this is by using a lip conditioner during the day with SPF and at night with no SPF."
And don't forget to properly prime your lips.
"In order for your lipstick to look professional and polished, you must use a proper lip primer and lip liner for a more defined lip," Nieves said. "Using a lip brush will give the appearance of a flawless lip. This will make any color look fabulous on the lips and last even longer."
