Dealing with summer beauty problems

Summertime is full of fun outdoor activities and events. However, being outdoors in the summer sun can also leave you primed for melting makeup and other beauty disasters.

Follow these tips to help avoid these common summer beauty problems.

Melting makeup

Humidity and heat can melt your makeup right off your face. Avoid smudged makeup by choosing the right products. Start out with the right moisturizer and sunscreen underneath. Pick oil-free products, and use a light hand. Allow your moisturizer (and sunscreen) to absorb completely before putting on your makeup.

Remember you don't need much makeup when you are outdoors anyway. Forget about heavy eye shadow, liquid eyeliner and lipstick. Keep it simple with just a coat or two of mascara, a touch of blush and a tinted lip balm. If you must wear foundation or eye shadow, using a primer will also help keep your makeup in place. Pick one that isn't too heavy and use just a light coat.

Choose the right mascara. If you are going to be in the water, you need a waterproof formula -- which is geared toward repelling water and tears. However, if you are just going to be out in the sun, you need a smudge proof formula -- one that is designed to combat oil and sweat. Some mascaras are both waterproof and smudge proof but most aren't, so read your labels.

Orange palms

Don't let tanning products leave you with those dreaded orange palms. Wear gloves when applying bronzer and sunless tanner. When you need to apply the product to the back of your hands, simply squirt a little on the back of one hand and then rub it against the back of the other.

Speaking of bronzer, another summer beauty faux pas is too much facial bronzer. Remember, you don't want to look like Snooki. You just want a fresh sunkissed look. Stick to a bronzer that is just a shade or two darker than your natural skin color. Apply it lightly with a big fluffy brush to the places that the sun hits your face naturally.

Nasty heels

Crusty, flaky, dry heels are embarrassing in the summertime. Even the perfect pedicure won't distract from your nasty heels. Soak your feet in a warm milk bath (four parts water to one part milk) for 15-20 minutes. Then, scrub your feet with an exfoliating foot scrub. You can find a number of invigorating scrubs at the drugstore, or make your own. Follow up by scrubbing your heels with a pumice stone.

Before you go to sleep, apply a thick, rich moisturizer to your feet such as cocoa butter or a trusted favorite -- Vaseline. Then sleep with a pair of cotton socks on. Though your heels won't be magically repaired overnight, they'll be on the road to recovery before you know it.
