Learn to love, not fight, your naturally curly locks!

Curly hair survival tips

When it comes to hair, most women want what they don't have. Think about it, ladies: How many times have you straight-haired chicks longed voluminous curls? And how often do you curly ladies pull out the flat iron and demolish your hair's sexy curves?

As a naturally curly gal, I've always had a love-hate relationship with my waves. And it took awhile to get to the point where I could truly fall in love with my curls. I did so with the help of some key tips and tricks I picked up in interviews with industry professionals. Want to love your curls too and survive their wild mood swings? Check out these top tips!

Get thee to a stylist

Behind every great head of curly hair is an amazing stylist. Trust me, gals, the right stylist can make a world of difference for your curls. If your locks always seem to be a bit too rebellious or never quite curl in the way you'd prefer (thus leading you to straighten them), get a second opinion and seek out a new stylist. The right stylist will know how to work with (not fight) the natural pattern of your curls and bring out the best in your hair.

Choose your products wisely

A lot of us are very flaky when it comes to our products. We fall in love with one cream or mousse that seems to do the trick, but then drop it at the first sign of betrayal. Or, we try every product we can get our hands on in the quest for perfect hair. But for curly hair, be picky with your products. No two curls are created equal, and while a gel might be perfect for one pattern of curls, another might respond better to a lighter mousse or cream. Consult with your stylist to find out just what type of curl you have (is it fine, is it thick?) and choose your products accordingly. It'll make a world of difference.

less is more

Like most things in life, when it comes to taking care of your curls, less is more. Less product could help your curls shape better, less heat treating could help your true curls shine, etc. I always find that the less I do to my curls, the better they come out. Learn to embrace the air-dry, ladies, or invest in a good diffuser (they'll help bring out a sexier version of your natural curl).
