According to Dianna Feldman, co-founder of TopButton.com, a site devoted to sample sales as the leading community of fashion forward shoppers, explains sample sales are dedicated for the hard core fashionista. “Designer goods and prices are in most cases, at least fifty to eighty-five, even ninety percent off retail.”
Plus, she says not only are the discounts a great bargain, they’re stylish-ious, too. “It’s a win-win all around.” Since labels need to get rid of samples shown to buyers, consumers like us are getting hot frocks within the very season they’re showing. Feldman says she’s not an advocate of overspending and neither should you. “I like a variety of items; the best way is to get a great designer piece at an affordable price.”
Rachel Johnson, wardrobe stylist, agrees. “Sample sales are the way to go.” Plus, she adds if you want to look chic without doling out the cash, think thrift store, flea markets and consignment stores. “They’re a way to create your own style by finding unique pieces that make you stand out.” Her advice? Add a scarf or charms to your purse, get a thick corset kind of belt and when in doubt, think basic black, baby. You can’t go wrong with a little black dress, a pair of high black pumps, and a great black bag.
Once you have the basic essentials, Shari Shatkin, chief merchandising officer, SmartBargains.com, emphasizes taking some risks. “Off-the shoulder dresses are hot…clutches are fun in bright colors at a disposable price, jewelry is big and bold and aviator sunglasses are very in,” she says. Finding the right Carrie look is really flattering if you look for asymmetrical patterns. This season into summer expect to see a lot of prints, geometrics, and color blocking such as a dress where one arm is black, the other is white, and the skirt portion is blue.
As for Shatkin’s secret for glamour gals achieving their own SATC signature style? “Women look great when they’re comfortable. Not everyone can wear a floral dress but they may find a great way to wear a floral top underneath a jacket.” Since her site is a discount store online (think Filene’s basement without having to consistently go back to the store to find a bargain), she explains, “There are always really great brands that take inspiration from high end designers that Sex and the City would wear.” For instance, a pair of Manolos cost $600. A similar pair of Jessica Simpson shoes cost $95 which sell for $49.99 on Smart Bargain.
Now that’s what we call smart and sexy shopping.
