What You Do
Preheat oven to 250 degrees F. Mix together, salt, flour, and water until a dough is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour, continue to do so until stickiness is gone. BE CAREFUL. Do not add too much flour, this will dry out the dough and will cause it to crack before you get a chance to bake it.
THIS DOUGH IS NOT EDIBLE.
Witch Hat
Grab some dough, about a palm full, and roll it in your hands to form a smooth ball. Roll it into a tube then place one end on the cookie sheet. Use your thumb to press down along the bottom,
forming an edge that will be the hat’s brim. Work the dough into a point at the top. Roll a small piece of dough in your hands, then roll into a rope and flatten for the hat band. Carefully
place it around the hat. Take an even smaller amount of dough, roll it, flatten and square it off. Use a toothpick to remove the center, creating the buckle. Carefully place the buckle on the hat
band.
Signs
Roll a small palm full of salt dough in your hands and work it into a flat rectangle. Repeat this step to make a second sign.
Base
To create the base, simply roll a large palm full of dough into a ball, then flatten to about ¼” thickness. Make the edges interesting by curving them. Place on the cookie sheet.
Bake the salt dough items in the oven for approximately 2 - 2.5 hours. Check the bottom of the hat for spots that are not done. The hat may take longer to cook as it is much thicker than the other pieces. If not done, remove the smaller items and return the hat to the oven. When finished, remove from oven and allow to cool completely, at least 3-4 hours.
Broom
Gather some raffia in your fingers, creating the bristles of the broom. Use hot glue gun to attach them to the end of the twig, working your way all the way around. Tie a piece of ribbon around the
raffia into a bow, about ½” down from the base of the raffia bristles. Wrap ribbon around the handle of the broom as well (twig) and glue in place.
Decorate
Paint the hat black. Paint the band purple and the buckle silver. Use the back of a paint brush or the eraser end of a pencil to dot on yellow spots all over the hat, excluding the brim. When dry,
paint entire surface of hat with gold glitter glue.
Paint the signs tan. Add a border of brown around the edges. Be sure to paint both sides. When dry, use the black marker to write “Witch Is In” on one sign, and “Witch Is Out” on the other sign. When dry add a coat of glitter glue to the signs. Paint the base black then add a coat of glitter glue.
Spray all painted items with a coat of acrylic sealer spray.
Assemble
Place base on work surface. Position all items first before gluing anything. Place hat on one side of the base, buckle facing outward, the broom on the other side, and the signs on each side,
facing out so they can be read from both sides. (see photo as guide) Hot glue all items in place.
