When you hear someone had liposuction, does the dreaded thought of “going under the knife” come to mind? What if you could get the same results with a procedure that takes about an hour, is knife-free, requires no operating room, has a lower risk of complications, and immediate results? This is all possible with Smartlipo.

Smartlipo: Laser-assisted Liposuction

Smartlipo is a laser-assisted liposuction that is quoted “as one of the most successful liposuction treatments,” according to Kimberly Patterson, a medical aesthetician, consultant and educator. This preferable, surgery-free procedure to remove fat and cellulite started in Europe and was approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA in November 2006.

Smartlipo is appealing to adults of all ages

Smartlipo is a safe alternative to traditional liposuction. It can take “only minutes to two to three hours, depending on the area(s) being treated,” Patterson explains. “Our most popular procedures are the hips, thighs, buttocks, back and abdominal area, the age range varies starting in the 20’s and up, based on awareness [of the procedure] and provider availability. Maturing patients that are serious about overall well-being are searching for a non-invasive, non-surgical option and are really enjoying the results of Smartlipo,” she says.

Smartlipo is customizable

At Blue MedSpa in Atlanta, Georgia, the procedure “begins with a through consultation [with the patient] to review the treatment best suited to meet the individual goals of the person. Then we create a treatment that is outlined and customized to meet these needs and to ensure that our patients are very educated on the procedure of choice as well as home care and follow up,” says Patterson.

“Our patients complete a full health history and questionnaire and the [desired] procedure is reviewed by our medical director and the facilitating member of our medical team of experts certified to perform Smartlipo,” she continues.

Smartlipo results are almost immediate

Once the procedure is complete, a patient can see and feel the results as the swelling subsides and they are able to return to normal daily activities within a week to two weeks. The possible side effects are bruising and numbness in the treated area.

Patterson warns, “The larger the amount of fat tissue that is removed, the longer period of time for the true results to be revealed, as the skin and body take time to adjust to the change. The treatments are usually a one time procedure that last about three years or longer.”

Smartlipo is not for everyone

Although Smarlipo is cutting edge and safer than traditional liposuction procedures, it is not for everyone.

“Candidates for Smartlipo are in good physical condition, should be within 20 to 25 pounds of their ideal weight and participating in a nutritional diet and weight loss or management program that they can easily stay with,” informs Patterson.

In addition, make sure the Smartlipo professional is right for you. Patterson emphasizes, “You need to feel comfortable with the providing professional. Be sure that they educate you on the benefits of the procedure as well as success in meeting your goals as a whole and not just providing a treatment.”

“A provider should incorporate a comprehensive pre- and post-op care plan that may include other suggestions to benefit your outcomes, such as detoxifying options, nutritional suggestions, at home care as well as information if you are not an ideal candidate for this procedure,” she adds.

How much does Smartlipo cost?

The cost varies depending on the provider and the areas of the body being treated. On average, Smartlipo can start at $2,500 per area, and some providers offer financing options.

Do your research

Patterson says, “Individuals that are interested in Smartlipo should research the available providers as well as the facility and the care given during your consultation. Much information can be gathered simply by asking questions and touring a facility.” Remember health and safety first.

It's no party folks. This is a SURGICAL procedure meaning: weeks of having to wear a compression garment to control swelling and much bruising. Not to mention the lumpiness and scars (small as they maybe). Sounds e-z but as they say, if it sounds too good 2 B true, it probably is.

I think this article is very misleading. I went in for a SmartLipo consultation about a month ago, and the doctor told me that this procedure WAS surgical. The doctor has to make several incisions with a scalpel to insert the laser and they have to use anesthesia. Make sure you do good research on procedures!
