A study released in mid-March says that higher anxiety levels may lead women to live longer. But it is never good to be consumed with concerns, particularly if they cause severe anxiety. Here are some steps you can take to reduce your anxiety and stress levels. No lady needs to live longer riddled with anxiety.

Constantly plagued with anxiety? Don’t worry – you just may live longer. So says a team of researchers from the Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University, who studied 1,000 elderly women over the course of 15 years. Their results conclude that women who were more anxiety-ridden at the start of the study outlived those with less stress. The team deduced that higher anxiety may have led the participants to be more active and health-conscious.

That may be anxiety relieving news for the long haul, but you should still take steps to reduce your anxiety to avoid consequences like depression or stress-induced sicknesses later. So to live your life with less anxiety and stress, try these tips, as recommended by The American Academy of Family Physicians.

CONFRONT YOUR FEARS

The best way to ease your anxiety? Face your fears. Begin by just picturing yourself going face-to-face with the very things that worry you and cause anxiety. By getting used to the idea of confronting your anxiety-causing concerns before you actually do it, you will actually feel more comfortable the time comes to face them.

LIMIT YOUR WORRY TIME

To keep worries from weighing you down with anxiety, try to limit the time you spend mulling over your anxiety-inducing concerns to just 30 minutes a day. And instead of dwelling on what may happen, focus more what is actually happening. Then let go of the worry and go on with your day – with less anxiety.

REDUCE ANXIETY WITH A DEEP BREATH AND A GOOD SWEAT

Rid yo
urself of stress through deep breathing exercises, yoga and exercise. When you are feeling particularly anxiety-panged with doubt and concerns, hit the yoga studio or go for a power walk. Or, try this simple progressive muscle relaxation technique: Choose a muscle, tense it for a few seconds, then relax. Do this with all of your muscles, starting with your feet and working your way up your body. Breathe deeply and imagine your exhalations are releasing your anxiety every time you relax a muscle or muscle group.

REDUCE YOUR CAFFEINE INTAKE

Caffeine may be great for keeping you energized, but it can also intensify your sense of anxiety as it stimulates your nervous system. Same goes for over-the-counter diet pills, and cough and cold medicines that contain a decongestant. Limit your intake of any stimulant-containing substance to reduce the gripping symptoms of anxiety.

CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR

Do not be afraid to discuss your anxiety with your doctor, especially if you are feeling totally consumed by constant anxiety-causing concerns. Your doctor may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, suggest counseling or help you form a personal anxiety reduction plan.

stop taking all those medicines. I have been having axiety panic attacks for 11 years now at one time i was put in a meatal institution and i thought i was going to lose my mind. it has taken me until this year to realize im not dying. I wont say that i never have them but i dont have them like i use to. i just seemed like the medicine made me worse. I do take a body balance that helps me with viteams and supplement that i need that helps and i have been doing cognative thinking. There is a book out out there about that. its all in our mind and what we think and fear. Fear is are worst enemy and i hate fear. i want to live a normal life. What ever that is. I was at the point i couldnt even work. i am really trying to look into other areas of help relaxation tapes and walking watching my breathing. I am starting a new diet. For my health if anyone wants to talk ask me let me know what they think ihave been this way since i was a kid and i got worse after my dad had some problems. then i had cancer and survived. I have to realize that i want to live and i have kids to live for. Give me ideas and i will help anyone anyway i can.

Just found this site. Am having HORRIBLE time w/severe anxiety and panic attacks. Have had anxiety disorder, and mild panic attacks in the past, but this is unlike anything I have EVER experienced before. Am currently taking Effexor XR; Trileptal and Trazedone. Began having VERY SEVERE panic attacks about one month ago, went to see Psychiatrist who prescribes these drugs. Was told to double up on Trazedone. At the time was hearing voices of relatives who had passed away years ago, one in particular. After following doctor's orders, I DID take 2 Trazedone, which is when I heard voices of "dark people" ... meaning evil spirits. Went back to scheduled appointment with Psychiatrist, who prescribed Resparil ... omg..... was a horrible experience and I was taking meds to sleep. Called psych., was told to take 3 pills in evening before sleep... did so, and could ABSOLUTELY NOT FUNCTION AS A NORMAL PERSON. Was afraid of own shadow and cried and screamed. Called psych. again last night, was told that perhaps I should go into "hospital". Told him point blank that NEVER IN MY LIFE HAVE I EXPERIENCED SUCH DEVASTATING PERIODS OF ANXIETY UNTIL I WAS PUT ON THESE TWO DRUGS. AS IN NEVER EVER. Anyone else had same or similar experiences? Don't tell me.... I AMMMM going to see a highly recommended psychiatrist (referred to by my Therapist). Oh yes, am female, 64 y.o. on 9/21 and am frankly, scared to death. Please, can someone relate to me?

I try to relax but feel like a panic atack takes over and I will fill flushed in my face then I will sweat feel horable I should be over with hot flashes but still have them I just turned 65 so what next

Try to relax by thinking of somewhere you really enjoyed when you were a kid. I remember swinging on a tire swing in my Grandfathers yard . Or picture yourself on a beach with the wind blowing softly. Anything you have to concentrate on besides your panic atack. When you feel it coming on, do one of two things. Deep breathe or try to think of somewhere you 'd like to be.
